The Latest On The Closer Carousel/Circus: 5.12.2012

This has been without a doubt the worse year on record for major league closers. The amount of closers lost to injury times the number of closer with terrible starts, divided by the number of closers who have just lost the job is a formula even a Sabermetrics wannabee with a degree from MIT couldn’t compute.  Since spring training has wrapped up, at least 17 closer jobs have changed hands due to any of … Read entire article »

Carlos Marmol OUT as Closer, Closer Committee in Chicago

Carlos Marmol OUT as Closer, Closer Committee in Chicago

Manager Dale Sveum told Carlos Marmol that he will no longer be closing for the Cubs for the time being.  How long this will last no one knows, but what is known, Marmol’s future as a closer is in jeopardy.  Sveum told reporters that he will be using a closer-by-committee approach and will use right-hander Rafael Dolis and left-hander James Russell to close out games. Rafael Dolisis a 24-year old rookie with decent stuff.  In … Read entire article »

Danger Zone: Closers In The Hot Seat

Danger Zone: Closers In The Hot Seat

So far in 2012 it has not been the best year for closers.  Several great closers got knocked out early with injuries and many of the fill-in closers are doing very.  There are a lot of new faces amongst the closer ranks who are outperforming the stud closers.  Lets take a look at some of the closers that are in danger of losing their jobs: DANGER ZONE Brad Lidge, WAS – Is Brad Lidge ever not … Read entire article »

Closer Daily Dish: Johnson, League, Marmol, Nathan, Guerra

There was plenty of action for closers last night.  Saving are beginning to rack up. Looking at the top ten closers in saves and it’s a list most of us wouldn’t recognize before this year.  Some of these guys are here to stay and others are a few bad outing from long relief.  Here is the daily dish for Wednesday. Last night  in LA,  Craig Kimbrel and Javy Guerra squared off, well sorta.  Kimbrel saved his sixth … Read entire article »

2012 Player Profile: Carlos Marmol, Chicago Cubs

2012 Player Profile: Carlos Marmol, Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are under new management and have a new coach.  That means that all Cub fans can believe in their beloved Cubs, at least until June. Hopefully this change will make the Cubs closer Carlos Marmol a pitcher more consistent pitcher.  Marmol has all the tools a great closer needs, except one.  Control.  Last year Marmol’s BB/9 was a whopping 5.84.  That is excessive for a closer, but the real impact isn’t just a Sabermetric calculation.  The … Read entire article »

The Closer Report’s Weekend Swing 5.29.2011

The Closer Report’s Weekend Swing 5.29.2011

The weekend swing was a term I coined while discussing my head-to head leagues on my fantasy baseball podcasts. It was used to describe the games that would be played Friday through Sunday and could have a major impact on the number of wins and losses I received for the week H2H. I’m taking that term to a whole new level for The Closer Report. Each weekend I will report on … Read entire article »

Weekly Roundup: Tough First Week For Some Closers

Weekly Roundup: Tough First Week For Some Closers

It’s no surprise that we see some slow starting closers coming out of the gates in a short first week of baseball.  From my point of view, I’m just happy baseball has arrived. Jonathan Broxton While there were several bad performances, there were some good ones to discuss as well.  Let’s open with my boy Jonathan Broxton.  He was left for dead by most pre-season experts and was a great value around rounds 9-11.  He opened … Read entire article »

Fantasy Baseball: 2011 Top 15 Closer Rankings

By Ryan Lester, www.lesterslegends.com Click here to enter the 2011 Fantasy Baseball Team Name Contest Here’s a look at some fantasy basketball players that blew up the box score last night. . 1. Brian Wilson, San Francisco Giants: Wilson led the Majors in saves (48) last year while posting a 1.81 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 93 Ks. . 2. Heath Bell, San Diego Padres: His stats read almost identical to Wilson’s. It’s really a preference thing here. I like Wilson because his starting pitching staff is better. Plus, without Adrian Gonzalez, the Padres could struggle to give him leads. . 3. Neftali Feliz, Texas Rangers: His stuff is filthy. He will get to close right out of the gate. He has a 0.82 WHIP and a .160 BAA in 100-1/3 innings. . 4. Joakim Soria, Kansas City Royals: … Read entire article »
