There was plenty of action for closers last night. Saving are beginning to rack up. Looking at the top ten closers in saves and it’s a list most of us wouldn’t recognize before this year. Some of these guys are here to stay and others are a few bad outing from long relief. Here is the daily dish for Wednesday. Last night in LA, Craig Kimbrel and Javy Guerra squared off, well sorta. 2012 Player Profile: Craig Kimbrel, Atlanta Braves
Craig Kimbrel splashed onto the scene in 2011 and simply dominated. Granted he had some bad outings and battled inconsistency throughout the season that led to 8 blown saves. Still, the raining rookie of the year notched a record 46 saves for the Braves, was an All-Star, and managed 127 strikeouts. His ERA was only 2.10 throughout all that and his WHIP was even more impressive at 1.04. Kimbrel is an outstanding closer with the potential to … Read entire article »

Craig Kimbrel Earns Record 27th Save
Craig Kimbrel recorded his 27th save of the season earlier today and set a major league record for a rookie with 27 saves before the All-Star game. He did it at 23 years old and is now chasing Neftali Feliz’s rookie season record of 40 saves, which was set last season. Congratulations Craig Kimbrel! … Read entire article »

Trouble In Atlanta For Kimbrel; Venters Closing?
I’ve been keeping an eye on this situation for about a week now as CRAZY Fredi Gonzalez, manager of the Atlanta Braves is up to no good again. If you remember Fredi Gonzalez from his Florida Marlins days. He often makes quick decisions on his bullpen and everyday starters for that matter. Kimbrel was 17/22 in save opportunities and currently leads all closers with 49 Ks. Gonzalez has temporarily removed Kimbrel from the closer role after struggling … Read entire article »

Kimbrel Bounces Back, Boggs and Papelbon Remain Hot
After blowing his first save, Craig Kimbrel bounced back nicely to lock down his fifth save of the season. He needed 13 pitches to dispatch the aggressive swinging San Francisco Giants batters, and because of that didn’t record any strikeouts. He wasn’t his sharpest again, but pulled off the clean and easy save. Jonathan Papelbon saved his third game in as many days. He dispatched the Angels with ease for a … Read entire article »

Young Guns: Kimbrel And Perez Blow Saves
The Murphy Gang was on the loose and two young gun closers went down tonight in completely different ways. Craig Kimbrel just wasn’t meant to pitch tonight. He opened the ninth inning with six straight balls, before getting a gimmie strike from Blue (“You’re my boy Blue!”). A wild pitch later and a single and the save was blown. It wasn’t all bad for Kimrel owners, he struck out the side in the tenth … Read entire article »

Fast Start, Slow Start Closers
We have almost two weeks wrapped up in the 2011 MLB season and there have been some pleasant surpirses within the ranks of closers and some dismal dissappointments. Let’s start with the pleasant surprises. Jonathan Broxton – Broxton was left for dead by the fly-by-night experts. Granted he isn’t his old self and very well never will be, but he is still an elite closer on a team that uses it’s closer often. He hasfive … Read entire article »

Weekly Roundup: Tough First Week For Some Closers
It’s no surprise that we see some slow starting closers coming out of the gates in a short first week of baseball. From my point of view, I’m just happy baseball has arrived. Jonathan Broxton While there were several bad performances, there were some good ones to discuss as well. Let’s open with my boy Jonathan Broxton. He was left for dead by most pre-season experts and was a great value around rounds 9-11. He opened … Read entire article »

Kimbrel And Rivera Open Up The Season With Saves, Axford Blows it!
Atlanta 2 Washington 0 I never lost faith that Craig Kimbrel would walk out of the bullpen for the ninth inning and that was certainly confirmed when Jonny Venters pitched the eighth. Kimbrel came in and looked fairly sharp. He needed 18 pitches (11 strikes) and finished with a perfect save and two strikeouts. We will see where it goes from here, but I have no doubt that Kimbrel will continue to get the call. NY Yankees … Read entire article »

MLB Spring Training Update: Craig Kimbrel Vs. Jonny Venters
In the race for which pitcher will close for the Atlanta Braves, Jonny Venters is the favorite to win the job. Granted it seemed that is was Kimbrel’s to lose, he hasn’t shown much in the way of wanting the job. So far through 6.1 innings of work, Kimbrel has a bloated ERA of 5.68 with eight strikeouts. Most of the the damage done on Kimbrel was from a homerun. For Venters, he’s thrown seven … Read entire article »
