The Latest On The Closer Carousel/Circus: 5.12.2012

This has been without a doubt the worse year on record for major league closers. The amount of closers lost to injury times the number of closer with terrible starts, divided by the number of closers who have just lost the job is a formula even a Sabermetrics wannabee with a degree from MIT couldn’t compute.  Since spring training has wrapped up, at least 17 closer jobs have changed hands due to any of … Read entire article »

The Closer Report: Closer’s Rise and Fall, April 30, 2012

Closers on The RISE Santiago Casilla, SF – After getting pulled in the ninth and losing a save chance, Casilla has bounced back.  He saved three games last week and has his season ERA down to 1.04 and a WHIP of 0.92. The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. Weekly Injury Update: April 27, 2012

One of the more strange injuries came out this week. It’s not even an injury and while it’s happened before, I’ll call it weird. A bacterial infection for a closer?  Let’s get to the latest edition of The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. The Good Jim Johnson, BAL - Johnson was hospitalized with a bacterial infection.  At first it was suspected that he had the flu, but it ended up being a bacterial infection.  He is … Read entire article »

Closer Daily Dish: Capps, Axford, Cordero, Rivera, Aceves

Closer Daily Dish: Capps, Axford, Cordero, Rivera, Aceves

It was a relatively quiet night for closers Monday, but there was some activity that owners were excited to see.  Almost all the closer activity was in the American League, so lets start there. Mariano Rivera notched his fourth save of the season Monday night in a 7-4 win over the Rangers. Rivera didn’t look like the 42-year old fading pitcher a lot of us expected.  He had a 1-2-3 inning on 13 pitches against … Read entire article »

Mayday! MayDay! Closers Going Down. Worried?

Mayday! MayDay! Closers Going Down. Worried?

What a rough start to the season for MLB closers.  Face it, this is 2012 and maybe the Mayans are on to something.  I mean, Rivera blows his first save, the Red Sox are begging on hands and knees for saves, and we have yet to see Craig Kimbrel.  What could be worse?  How about Sergio Santos blowing his first save or Chris Perez looking like, well Chris Perez. Even Mr. Perfect Jose Valverde opend … Read entire article »

Weekly Roundup: Tough First Week For Some Closers

Weekly Roundup: Tough First Week For Some Closers

It’s no surprise that we see some slow starting closers coming out of the gates in a short first week of baseball.  From my point of view, I’m just happy baseball has arrived. Jonathan Broxton While there were several bad performances, there were some good ones to discuss as well.  Let’s open with my boy Jonathan Broxton.  He was left for dead by most pre-season experts and was a great value around rounds 9-11.  He opened … Read entire article »

Fantasy Baseball: 2011 Top 15 Closer Rankings

By Ryan Lester, www.lesterslegends.com Click here to enter the 2011 Fantasy Baseball Team Name Contest Here’s a look at some fantasy basketball players that blew up the box score last night. . 1. Brian Wilson, San Francisco Giants: Wilson led the Majors in saves (48) last year while posting a 1.81 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 93 Ks. . 2. Heath Bell, San Diego Padres: His stats read almost identical to Wilson’s. It’s really a preference thing here. I like Wilson because his starting pitching staff is better. Plus, without Adrian Gonzalez, the Padres could struggle to give him leads. . 3. Neftali Feliz, Texas Rangers: His stuff is filthy. He will get to close right out of the gate. He has a 0.82 WHIP and a .160 BAA in 100-1/3 innings. . 4. Joakim Soria, Kansas City Royals: … Read entire article »
