Several Closers Remain Smoking Hot or Entering the June Swoon!
It’s been a great month of June for several red-hot closers, but with the start of summer could spell trouble for many of those closers. Let’s start in Texas, where the summer heat effects the ball more so than any other stadium in baseball. Joe Nathan has been on fire over the past five weeks. He hasn’t surrendered a run since May 13th, and during that run he has notched eight saves and lowered his … Read entire article »

Debunking Jonathan Papelbon’s non-save thing
By Matt Gelb, Philly.com When Dexter Fowler bounced one through the right side, Jonathan Papelbon could only look skyward. He had allowed another run in a non-save situation and probably a few watching in the Delaware Valley groaned, “See?” Papelbon’s usage is a topic that has incited debate, but the richest reliever in baseball history was pitching Wednesday in a tie game at home and that was expected. He has allowed seven runs in 10 1/3 innings … Read entire article »

2012 Player Profile: Jonathan Papelbon, Philadelphia Phillies
Jonathan Papelbon has spent the last six years doing one thing and doing it well. Closing games. For the Red Sox, Papelbon saved 219 games in 247 chances. Consider it even more remarkable that he did it in the American League East (44 saves against Yankees and Rays). However, I and many others feel that the closer needed a change of scenery and in 2012 he will open the season closing for the Philadelphia … Read entire article »

MLB Off-Season Closer Analysis: Philadelphia Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies made one of the biggest off-season acquisitions, signing Jonathan Papelbon to a four-year deal worth $50 million. That shored up their bullpen, which is facing the losses of Brad Lidge and Ryan Madson. While Lidge can use a change of scenery, losing Madson will be felt at some point in the season. Going forward, Papelbon will be the closer for the Phillies with setup man Antonio Bastardo backing him up. Papelbon was one of the most effective closers … Read entire article »

Kimbrel Bounces Back, Boggs and Papelbon Remain Hot
After blowing his first save, Craig Kimbrel bounced back nicely to lock down his fifth save of the season. He needed 13 pitches to dispatch the aggressive swinging San Francisco Giants batters, and because of that didn’t record any strikeouts. He wasn’t his sharpest again, but pulled off the clean and easy save. Jonathan Papelbon saved his third game in as many days. He dispatched the Angels with ease for a … Read entire article »

Will Papelbon’s Slider Add To His Fantasy Value?
Back in 2009, Jonathan Papelbon added a new weapon to his arsenal, the slider. It’s one of the more devastating breaking balls a closer can throw and he wanted it. Since that time and even before then, Papelbon was and is a fastball/splitter pitcher. Over the past two seasons, Papelbon has thrown his slider about once every ten pitches. It ranges in speeds from 82 to 85 M.P.H. It will compliment his 94-96 M.P.H … Read entire article »

Fantasy Baseball: 2011 Top 15 Closer Rankings
By Ryan Lester, www.lesterslegends.com Click here to enter the 2011 Fantasy Baseball Team Name Contest Here’s a look at some fantasy basketball players that blew up the box score last night. . 1. Brian Wilson, San Francisco Giants: Wilson led the Majors in saves (48) last year while posting a 1.81 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 93 Ks. . 2. Heath Bell, San Diego Padres: His stats read almost identical to Wilson’s. It’s really a preference thing here. I like Wilson because his starting pitching staff is better. Plus, without Adrian Gonzalez, the Padres could struggle to give him leads. . 3. Neftali Feliz, Texas Rangers: His stuff is filthy. He will get to close right out of the gate. He has a 0.82 WHIP and a .160 BAA in 100-1/3 innings. . 4. Joakim Soria, Kansas City Royals: … Read entire article »
