Mayday! MayDay! Closers Going Down. Worried?
What a rough start to the season for MLB closers. Face it, this is 2012 and maybe the Mayans are on to something. I mean, Rivera blows his first save, the Red Sox are begging on hands and knees for saves, and we have yet to see Craig Kimbrel. What could be worse? How about Sergio Santos blowing his first save or Chris Perez looking like, well Chris Perez. Even Mr. Perfect Jose Valverde opend … Read entire article »

Jose Valverde’s Save Streak Ends at 52
It didn’t take long in 2012 for Jose Valverde to end his save streak. After going 49/49 in saves opportunities in 2011, Valverde’s streak harkened back all the way to 2010. On Thursday, opening day for the Tigers, he entered the ninth with a 2-0 lead. Call it nerves, opening day jitters, or a pitcher that just didn’t get enough time in spring training, the energetic closer gave up the save. The Red Sox … Read entire article »

2012 Player Profile: Jose Valverde, Detroit Tigers
Jose Valverde had an amazing 2011 season. Not only did he record 49 saves, but he didn’t blow a save all season. That is the first time I’ve ever seen a perfect record with that many opportunities. So while I can’t overlook it, I also can’t expect it again. Jose Valverde is a bit of an unpredictable pitcher. Only once in his nine years of MLB service has he ever put tow consecutive good … Read entire article »

Hanrahan Blows First Save, Valverde Saves 25th Straight
Well, it had to happen one of these days. Joel Hanrahan finally blew his first save of the season. Mark the date as July 17 and that is no typo. You have to give the guy some serious credit for lasting that long as it was only him and Jose Valverde who were left among the full time closers who have yet to blow a save in the 2011 season. It wasn’t the traditional blown save because Hanrahan … Read entire article »

Fantasy Baseball: 2011 Top 15 Closer Rankings
By Ryan Lester, www.lesterslegends.com Click here to enter the 2011 Fantasy Baseball Team Name Contest Here’s a look at some fantasy basketball players that blew up the box score last night. . 1. Brian Wilson, San Francisco Giants: Wilson led the Majors in saves (48) last year while posting a 1.81 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 93 Ks. . 2. Heath Bell, San Diego Padres: His stats read almost identical to Wilson’s. It’s really a preference thing here. I like Wilson because his starting pitching staff is better. Plus, without Adrian Gonzalez, the Padres could struggle to give him leads. . 3. Neftali Feliz, Texas Rangers: His stuff is filthy. He will get to close right out of the gate. He has a 0.82 WHIP and a .160 BAA in 100-1/3 innings. . 4. Joakim Soria, Kansas City Royals: … Read entire article »
