The Latest On The Closer Carousel/Circus: 5.12.2012

This has been without a doubt the worse year on record for major league closers. The amount of closers lost to injury times the number of closer with terrible starts, divided by the number of closers who have just lost the job is a formula even a Sabermetrics wannabee with a degree from MIT couldn’t compute.  Since spring training has wrapped up, at least 17 closer jobs have changed hands due to any of … Read entire article »

Who’s Closing For The Chicago White Sox?

Who’s Closing For The Chicago White Sox?

If there ever was a closer carousel, you got it in Chicago with the White Sox.  After giving the job to relatively unknown Hector Santiago, manager Robin Ventura paid the price with his risky selection.  Santiago ended April with a 8.53 ERA, two blown saves, and a very badly bruised ego.  Since then, Ventura has deployed Addison Reed, Matt Thornton, and even Chris Sale as the closer for the White Sox. Let me state this, all of … Read entire article »

The Closer Report: Closer’s Rise and Fall, April 30, 2012

Closers on The RISE Santiago Casilla, SF – After getting pulled in the ninth and losing a save chance, Casilla has bounced back.  He saved three games last week and has his season ERA down to 1.04 and a WHIP of 0.92. Chris Perez, CLE – You have to give it to Chris Perez.  As bad as he has been in some appearances this season and with the fact he was injured in spring training, … Read entire article »

Pitchers Who Could Be Closing By September. Part 2

Pitchers Who Could Be Closing By September. Part 2

Here is part 2 of my report on pitchers who could be closers by September. Every season closers come and go and it frustrates the heck out of fantasy managers.  The list I compiled below are the leading candidates that likely won’t open the season as the closer for his perspective team, but could end the season the closer.  These pitchers will get the job either from the current closer getting injured or the … Read entire article »

2012 Player Profile: Matt Thornton, Chicago White Sox

2012 Player Profile: Matt Thornton, Chicago White Sox

Matt Thronton is a dicey closer right now.  Currently he is the White Sox closer, but it is not a lock.  Thornton entered the 2011 season as the White Sox closer and simply imploded.  Not only did Thornton implode, but so did the rest of the White Sox bullpen until Sergio Santos arrived and calmed everything down. Now it looks as though he will get a second chance under new manager Robin Ventura.  While Thornton … Read entire article »

Struggling Closers Leading Into The All-Star Break

Struggling Closers Leading Into The All-Star Break

It’s been a trying year for the closer role. While we have watched several great performances from new and old closers like Craig Kimbrel , Joel Hanrahan, Kyle Farnsworth, and Francisco Cordero. There has also been its share of terrible and down right ugly performances by closers. Many of the closers on this list could be in danger of losing their job, especially around the trade deadline. Here are some closers who have already … Read entire article »

Baseball Bullpen Depth Charts Update 6.7.11

By Todd Farino, www.thecloserreport.com Check out our updated depths charts here. Oakland Athletics After the immediate failure of Grant Balfour, Manager Bob Geren went right back to Brian Fuentes.  After Fuentes went 2/2 in saves, Andrew Bailey was activated and has now become the closer for the Oakland Athletics.  While he blew his first save chance against the Red Sox, Bailey has looked outstanding and should have no problems going forward as the closer.  Lets just hope he stays healthy. Baseball Bullpen Depth Charts Update 5.3.11

Check out our latest depth charts update on our Depth Charts page. There has been a lot of movement in major league baseball depth charts as far as bullpens are concerned, but still some important moves have been made. Washington Nationals When the season opened and Sean Burnett came out as the closer I though Jim Riggleman had lost his mind.  However, Burnett showed to be a strong closer for about three saves, and then faded.  He has … Read entire article »

MLB Spring Training: Fantasy Closer Battles

MLB Spring Training: Fantasy Closer Battles

Here are some early returns for some tight closer battles during 2011 Spring Training. Craig Kimbrel Vs. Jonny Venters – So far, at least stat wise the job is going to Venters. He’s thrown four perfect innings, while striking out three. Kimbrel has also struckout three in 2.1 innings, but has a ERA at 15.43 on 4 ER thanks to a bad outing. In my opinion it’s Kimbrel’s job to lose, not Venters to win. Kevin … Read entire article »

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)—With job security out of the way, White Sox lefty Matt Thornton(notes) can now turn his attention to proving he should be Chicago’s closer. The All-Star reliever agreed to a $15 million, three-year contract Sunday that adds two years and $12 million to his previous deal. The 34-year-old Thornton went 5-4 with a 2.67 ERA and a career-high eight saves last season. He fanned 81 in 60 2-3 innings to become the first White … Read entire article »
