The Closer Report Shutting Down For 2011. Back in 2012

Hey guys.  I regret to inform you that The Closer Report is shutting down  for the remainder of the 2011 season.  Nothing is wrong, it’s just a busy and hectic year for The True Guru. With a new job (Thanks economy), a new house, and I’m getting married August 28th (Thank you), I just don’t have the time this year to give the proper attention to closers as this site requires.  I also have football to … Read entire article »

Don’t-Tel Me The Cardinals Traded For Octavio Dotel!

Don’t-Tel Me The Cardinals Traded For Octavio Dotel!

According to Joel Strauss of the St. Louis Dispatch, the Cardinals will acquire Octavio Dotel in a 4-player deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.  Read here: http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/cardinal-beat/article_0f7b1b4c-b86e-11e0-86d2-0019bb30f31a.html This deal would give the Cardinals a badly needed veteran arm in their bullpen and an experienced closer.  However, I don’t like the deal.  Dotel has pitched much better of late and would be better served in the National League, he is still a big liability for a team that … Read entire article »

MLB Spring Training Update: Dotel Out, Francisco Hurt, Rauch In

MLB Spring Training Update: Dotel Out, Francisco Hurt, Rauch In

As I expected, Octavio Dotel will not be competing for the closer job in Toronto.  Instead, he’ll likely be the setup man or 7th inning reliever.  Not only has he been lit up this spring to a tune of a 15.00 ERA, but he is also suffering from a sore right hamstring. The leading candidate for the job, Frank Francisco has been sidelined for over a week with tightness in his right pectoral muscle. He … Read entire article »

MLB Spring Training: Fantasy Closer Battles

MLB Spring Training: Fantasy Closer Battles

Here are some early returns for some tight closer battles during 2011 Spring Training. Craig Kimbrel Vs. Jonny Venters – So far, at least stat wise the job is going to Venters. He’s thrown four perfect innings, while striking out three. Kimbrel has also struckout three in 2.1 innings, but has a ERA at 15.43 on 4 ER thanks to a bad outing. In my opinion it’s Kimbrel’s job to lose, not Venters to win. Kevin … Read entire article »

2011 Fantasy Baseball: Top 10 Closers To Avoid Drafting

2011 Fantasy Baseball: Top 10 Closers To Avoid Drafting

As it is every year, closers come and go throughout the season.  Whether it is performance based or injury, they will be replaced.  Here are 10 closers that despite their ADP, career numbers, or Closer Report Draft Kit ranking, I’d avoid at all costs.  1. Ryan Franklin, STL- Ok, wasn’t his 15 minutes up two years ago?  Give credit where it’s do to the steroid survivor that he’s lasted this long.  He will LIKELY open as the … Read entire article »

Impact Analysis: Frank Francisco Heads to Toronto

Impact Analysis: Frank Francisco Heads to Toronto

This is far bigger news then it is getting credit for.  The Blue Jays acquiring Frank Francisco just days after trading for power hitting catcher Mike Napoli has big implications.  First and foremost it shows that the Blue Jays don’t have confidence in Octavio “Don’t Tell Me” Dotel and maybe even less then I do.  It also shows that the rest off their talented bullpen doesn’t have what it takes to close out games … Read entire article »

Jon Rauch Signs With The Blue Jays

Jon Rauch Signs With The Blue Jays

Reliever and part-time closer Jon Rauch signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.  Rauch gets a $3.5 million salary this year, and the Blue Jays have a $3.75 million club option for 2012 with a $250,000 buyout. Rauch joins a already stacked Blue Jays bullpen that includes Jason Frasor, Casey Janssen, SHawn Camp, Jesse Carlson, and Octavio “Don’t Tell Me” Dotel. Dotel will be the closer to start spring training and likely the season, but his age, injury … Read entire article »
