Baseball Bullpen Depth Charts Update 5.3.11
Check out our latest depth charts update on our Depth Charts page. There has been a lot of movement in major league baseball depth charts as far as bullpens are concerned, but still some important moves have been made. Washington Nationals When the season opened and Sean Burnett came out as the closer I though Jim Riggleman had lost his mind. However, Burnett showed to be a strong closer for about three saves, and then faded. He has … Read entire article »

Roll The Dice and We Get Drew Storen!
For the record I never understood why Drew Storen was removed from the closer role for the Nationals at the start of the season. IN the first game of a double header, Jim Riggleman decided to bring Sean Burnett in for a two inning save and save Drew Storen for the night cap. It never got that far. Sean Burnett was relived after giving up 3 hits and an RBI single to Albert Pujols. Storen … Read entire article »

Storen Not Flying High In Washington
Jim Riggleman wasn’t kidding when he said that Sean Burnett was going to share the closing duties with Drew Storen. It happened during the second game of the season, surprising many to see Storen enter the game in the eighth inning. While he pitched alright, Storen gave up a home run to Alex Gonzalez on a down the middle curveball. I have always said that a closer with a curveball is not a good mix. It didn’t … Read entire article »

10 Value Pick Closers For Fantasy Drafts
2011 offers a surplus of value pick closers. Here are ten closers you need to eye in your fantasy draft for the best value for your pick. (No particular order) ADP statistics provided by www.mockdraftcentral.com. Craig Kimbrel, Atl – ADP: 282. Kimbrel is going on average in the 24th round. We are talking about the flame throwing Braves closer. A Braves closer should never go that late in the draft. Steal him in the … Read entire article »

Top 10 Sleeper Closers For 2011
1. Craig Kimbrel, Atlanta Braves – This guy is the right-handed version of Billy Wagner. With a 98MPH fastball and a propensity to strikeout batters, Kimbrel has what it takes to close. He’s on a great team that will provide him with plenty of save opportunities. He also lacked any serious competition in the Braves bullpen, though Venters is slightly capable. 2. Drew Storen, Washington Nationals – Last year I felt some heat with discussing … Read entire article »

The Rise of Drew Storen
Well, here comes Drew Storen. Last February I wrote about Storen and told my readers that he would eventually get called up, but wouldn’t be the most effective pitcher in his rookie season. In 2010, Storen put up solid numbers with a 3.58 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. By the end of the season he was closing for the Nationals and saved five games in seven chances. Clearly those weren’t the numbers expected by those … Read entire article »

Matt Capps Traded to Minnesota: Enter Drew Storen
The first of the the closers to move teams is Matt Capps. He was traded to Minnesota, opening the door for Drew Storen or Tyler Clippard. Both are more than capable to close, but Drew Storen was drafted to close. Storen has shown flashes of brilliance this year and overall has been fantastic out of the bullpen with a 2.73 ERA and 26 Ks. Tyler Clippard as been good this year, but inconsistent. He’s 8-6 with a 3.26 ERA. I feel that the Nationals will look to their future and put Storen out there. It’s low pressure and the Nationals aren’t going anywhere. Next year, the Nationals will open with Storen at closer and he should close the rest of this season. Listen to Todd “The True Guru” Farino breakdown all the closer activity three … Read entire article »

The Closer Report: April 21, 2010
SAVES:Matt Lindstrom (4) – Lindstrom threw a near perfect 12 pitch inning giving up a lone hit. His WHIP (1.14) and ERA (3.86) are still a bit high, but both are coming down. Mariano Rivera (6) – Rivera is absolutely unhittable. He recorded his sixth straight save, but showed a chink in his armor. He gave up a hit and needed 26 pitches to close out the game. His season ERA is still 0.00.Jose Valverde (4) – Valverde made quick work of Angel hitters needing only 10 pitches to get his fourth save. He got one strikeout and lowered his WHIP to 1.00.Joakim Soria (4) – SOria got back on track with his fourth save of the season beating the Blue Jays 4-3. He had a quite 1-2-3 inning and struckout … Read entire article »

Top 10 Closer Stories Of Spring Training 2010
So far it’s been an active spring for closers and injuries. Several jobs are still undecided and some top closers are out and will not be ready for the start of the season. Here are the top ten closer stories this spring. 1. Twins Closer – At this point the Twins are claiming they will go with a closer by committee by using anyone of their late inning relievers like Matt Guerrier, Jon Rauch, Jesse Crain, etc… I’m not buying it. Gardenhire has never been that kind of manager. Going back to Eddie Guardado, he has preferred to go to one guy in the ninth inning and stick with him. Knowing that, I’d consider the first two weeks an interviewing process for Jon Rauch and Matt Guerrier. Jesse Crain is … Read entire article »

Future Stars: Drew Storen, Washington Nationals
By Todd Farino, www.thecloserreport.com Player: Drew Storen Round Picked: 1 Position: RP Team: Washington Nationals MLB Chances in 2010? Date?: 65% / September call-up Drew Storen is as hyped as they come. A commanding closer in college for Stanford, Storen has shown a brilliance that is hard to find in a 22 year old player. The Nationals drafted him in the first round of last years draft. Scouting Storen you can see that he has complete command of his fastball and a hard curve and both can easily get players out. His fastball tops out at 94 and that is hittable for a closer. His curve isn’t the best closer pitcher. Storen will have to develop his rarely used changeup to be effective in the majors. Once developed Drew Storen could close for the Nationals … Read entire article »
